We&#8217;re going to explore hear how you can use them. The idea using them to do things like depict texture, and describing the contours of the surface of your subject. The art above is predominantly done with hatching, below you&#8217;ll find examples of cross hatching and other techniques. Letting them suggest the textural nature to the object, it&#8217;s contours in space beyond the edges, or abstractly even nuance in the picture plane.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[\/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One example i gave was <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/AozD63oxPkU?t=17m43s\" target=\"_blank\">the dent in the barrel<\/a>? Basically using variable width feathering to suggest the light and shadow cast as it plays across an imperfect surface.\u00a0Seeing that,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kebapi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mil\u00e9 Murtanovski<\/a>, a painter\u00a0friend [recently had the pleasure of visiting his art retreat\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallpondarts.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Small Pond<\/a> for an afternoon] sent me this link thinking you&#8217;d all enjoy. It&#8217;s perfect really, the spiraling wiggly line follows its own contour, its width and proximity to its previous path changes to create the image we see when we step back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[\/ezcol_1half_end]<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YIhn8m3sMto?rel=0\" width=\"950\" height=\"534\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Line for value!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today when you look at modern printing, it often uses this same optical illusion, just at much higher resolution. This is a very classic way to work, key thing to note is how he orders the work, doing all the lines in one direction, and then the next, and so on.
