And it can be tough sometimes on a busy schedule to come up with everything you&#8217;ll need for the course. This is a short list that will cover the key items, must have first class materials:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">&#x2666; Some Prismacolor Col-Erase\u00ae Colored Pencils, the come in box sets and loose individuals, I recommend at last 6, a set of two blue, two orange or green, and two red. A couple black as well are a good idea.<br \/>\n&#x2666; A good pencil sharpener or exacto knife\/box cutter to sharpen them with! One that does not break your tips. Try them at the shop. Some of the best for cheep are the small metal models.<br \/>\n&#x2666; Erasers; One kneadable &amp; One white plastic. You will want both!<br \/>\n&#x2666;3-4 18\u201dx24\u201d Cartridge paper pads! \u2013 you can use newsprint but only if it\u2019s smooth, not the rough kind. Really you will get far better results from white Cartridge paper pads! Again, smooth here makes a difference.<br \/>\n&#x2666; One Large [9\u201dx12\u201d or larger] sketchbook, or pad of SMOOTH paper. Not a &#8220;sketch&#8221; pad, something like fine marker paper is much better. And one small pocket or purse sized sketchbook for sketching while out and about. Again, Smooth paper is important!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Montreal can be a frustrating town to source some things in, but I&#8217;ve investigated a few stores locally, and included a list of shops at the end here I think I can recommend, but I can&#8217;t guarantee things will be in stock. Call ahead before you go to the shops to see what they have.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dynamic Drawing Materials List<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Pens and mark making tools<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666; <strong>Some\u00a0Prismacolor\u00a0Col-Erase\u00ae Colored Pencils<\/strong>, Sold\u00a0as singles at the DeSerres as well as in sets,\u00a0so you can pick your own colours. I suggest\u00a0light blue [<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>not the non-repro blue though, TOO LIGHT<\/em><\/strong><\/span>], <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">red<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #339966;\">green<\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">orange<\/span>! But they don&#8217;t cost much and the more the merrier.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666; A\u00a0thick wood pencil like a carpenter&#8217;s pencil, or solid graphite crayon, block, or pencil, for life sketching.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666; Dark blue or black BEROL Prismacolor pencils. For fast gesture work, gives a rich varied line. Not to be confused with the\u00a0Col-Erase pencils.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;\u00a01 0.7mm [or larger lead size] Mechanical Pencils! Drop lead pencil under 0.7mm tends to snap a LOT\u00a0while doing fast gesture work, so I advice you opt for the larger gauge\u00a0Mechanical Pencils.\u00a0<strong>&amp;<\/strong>\u00a01 pack of compatible HB leads\u00a0or softer for the Mechanical Pencils!<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;\u00a0<strong>A good sharpener!<\/strong> I&#8217;m a fan of the Palomino-KUM Long Point Pencil Sharpener. There are many kinds, advise trying it out in the store before buying, look for smooth feeling as it cuts the wood. Smooth = sharp, less likely to break your leds. Cheap sharpeners feel rough, they grind the wood and lead more and snap the led by torquing it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;\u00a0<em><strong>Optional<\/strong><\/em>: A set of coloured ballpoint pens.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;\u00a0<em><strong>Optional but recommended:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/Pentel-Pocket-Brush-Pen-for-Calligraphy\/pd\/1793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Pentel Pocket Brush<\/a>\u00a0[+refills]. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You WILL love this<\/span>! Some other kinds of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dNWwjXqDExs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pocket bushes<\/a> are acceptable, but make sure they have synthetic <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>HAIR<\/strong><\/span> tips, not <strong>FELT<\/strong> or <strong>RUBBER<\/strong>!\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>FYI<\/strong><\/span> DeSerres DOES stock these, but they don&#8217;t keep them with the regular pens and the pen dept people are typically oblivious to this.\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ask for them in the calligraphy section instead by name!<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Other brush pen options are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/Pentel-Standard-Brush-Pen-Medium-Tip\/pd\/2413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pentel Standard Brush Pen<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/Pentel-Pigment-Ink-Brush-Pen-Extra-Fine\/pd\/10976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pentel Pigment Ink Brush Pen<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/Kuretake-Zig-Cartoonist-Brush-Pen-No.-22-Black\/pd\/14288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kuretake Zig Cartoonist Brush Pen<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/Kuretake-No.-8-Fountain-Brush-Pen\/pd\/2672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kuretake No. 8 Fountain Brush Pen<\/a>. Possibly the cheapest option i&#8217;ve seen is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Akashiya-Brush-Colors-TL300-VA\/dp\/B00A83XKWE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akashiya Fude Brush Pens<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/blog\/guide-to-choosing-a-brush-pen-for-art\/pt\/626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more about this class of pens here!<\/a> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00ff00;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\">These are NOT felt tip brush pens<\/span>.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;\u00a0<em><strong>Optional<\/strong><\/em>: Some form of &#8220;Water Brush&#8221;, my favorites are the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pentel.com\/store\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=Aquash%E2%84%A2&amp;order=relevance&amp;dir=desc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pentel Aquash&#x2122; Water Brush<\/a>, this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coopstlaurent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art co-op stocks them<\/a>. But\u00a0Koi water brushes with reservoirs from SAKURA work too and there are several other models. These are for use for watercolor and ink wash work. They are <strong>not<\/strong> used interchangeably with ink filled brush pens though!\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/blog\/guide-to-choosing-a-brush-pen-for-art\/pt\/626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more about this class of pens here!<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;\u00a0<em><strong>Optional<\/strong><\/em>: A smaller utility knife [example]\u00a0or xacto style\u00a0knife. Handy tool generally and good for custom sharpening your pencils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Corrections! making changes and fixing stuff tools!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666; <strong>Erasers<\/strong>;\u00a0One kneadable\u00a0&amp;\u00a0One white plastic. You will want <strong>both!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A\u00a0Pentel Presto! Pocket Correction Pen<\/strong>.<\/span> They can be had at many art stores and most office supply shops. I&#8217;ve picked up\u00a0Prestos at De Serres and Staples. And saw bins full of them at Librairie Jasmin co-op UQAM! Bic makes something like them, and there are other correction pens but none as good. Ask for those before going with the Bics. And this is NOT correction Tape! <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Do not get Correction Tape<\/span>. These can both be used for crude drawing in white, and corrections. Extremely handy. I tend to buy two or three at a time myself.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>&#x2666; Optional<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0Daler Rowney, Luma Bleed Proof White\u00a0or\u00a0 Dr. Ph. Martin&#8217;s Bleed Proof White-Opaque paint for watercolour. I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/salgoodsam.com\/dd\/white-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">been doing some comparison testing<\/a> and there are other options out there, but as white graphic artists correctional paint goes, those two brands I find to be the best.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Papers!\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>We will use a lot, you&#8217;ll want to make sure you stock up.\u00a0The paper you use for dynamic studies can be cheep, but it needs to be decent, and most importantly\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff0000;\">smooth<\/span> paper! Here&#8217;s my\u00a0recommended\u00a0list.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666; A<strong>\u00a0Large<\/strong>\u00a0[9\u201dx12\u201d or larger] sketchbook, or pad of\u00a0<strong>smooth<\/strong> paper. And a\u00a0<strong>small<\/strong> pocket or purse sized sketchbook for sketching while out and about. Again,\u00a0<em><strong>Smooth paper is important!\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>I&#8217;ve recently fallen in love with the <a href=\"http:\/\/rhodiapads.com\/collections_boutique_r_by_rhodia.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RHODIA line of drawing pads with smooth\u00a0ivory paper<\/a>. Affordable &#8220;Ivory&#8221; smooth paper perfect for fast sketching. Whatever you get though, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SMOOTH<\/span><\/strong> is important! Smooth smooth smooth&#8230;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;3-4\u00a018\u201dx24\u201d White <strong>Bond<\/strong> paper pads!\u00a0You can use newsprint but look for some that&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>smooth<\/strong>, not the rough kind. We\u00a0get far better results doing fast gesture studies from a very smooth drawing serface. DO NOT GET EXPENSIVE LARGE DRAWING PAPER pads for this class. Someone always shows up with a 18&#215;24&#8243; pad of heavy good drawing that even has lots of tooth! NOPE, it&#8217;s pricey and the point is to have smooth paper, NOT fancy paper. \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#x2666;\u00a0<em><strong>Optional<\/strong><\/em>: A pad of mixed media paper or watercolour paper, something designed to be used with wet media as well as dry. You can buy them in large loose sheets or in a pad. I really like Fabriano Accademia and Mixed Media paper. We don&#8217;t use a lot of wet media in the class, but it&#8217;s an option so to investigate this option get a little to try it out!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Where to get it all!??<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A great MTL art coop is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coopstlaurent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Cohop Saint-Laurent des Arts<\/a>. They have some great prices and stock nearly everything on my list here and then some, Including the Pentel Water Brushes I love the most and both the Pentel Pocket Brush and Art Brush pens. This is a art store you really want to get to know. Prices with a membership are very competitive with all other shops in town.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jetpens.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jetpens<\/a> for links in several places, for some of the options they are one of the few really reliable suppliers but can take a while to deliver, a month is normal. Local art store options include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deserres.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeSerres<\/a>\u00a0all over town, and a few others. But I always recomend to call ahead or check their sites before heading out, to see who has what in stock where?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coopuqam.com\/5-Boutique-des-ARTS-succursale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Boutique des ARTS de la Coop UQAM<\/a>\u00a0is pretty good, and a one time membership feel means their prices are a tad cheaper than DeSerres generally after. And around the corner from it in the same building, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coopuqam.com\/4-Librairie-JASMIN-succursale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Librairie Jasmin co-op UQAM<\/a>! Great for things like the Gell Pens and Presto Correction Pens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Brush pens and nice sketchbooks can also be found usually at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aupapierjaponais.com\/index.php3?action=0&amp;title=LE+MAGASIN&amp;selected_menu=LE+MAGASIN&amp;lang=EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Au Papier Japonais<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nota-bene.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nota Bene Papeterie<\/a>\u00a0has some very nice sketchbooks and a great selection of pens!\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hachem.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Encadrements Des C\u00e8dres<\/a> is not bad but has a limited selection. I hear\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/avenuedesarts.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avenue Des Arts<\/a> in Westmount can be good, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kamapigment.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kama Pigment<\/a> for pencils and paints and a small drawing supply section, and if you&#8217;re a student at\u00a0concordia they have a decent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/w7sF32vZyUm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Supply Store<\/a> worth checking out too. Again I suggest calling ahead for all of these to see who has the things you need before visiting them, saves time.
