#1: For the last twenty four hours, there have been rumours and unofficial reports that San Diego is in flames, that the governor of California is dead, and that the cause of all this chaos is a talking ape named Caesar. But when the President of the United States announces that the whole thing is a hoax, no one knows what to believe.

#2: As the embattled American President struggles to stop Caesar's simian revolution from spreading across the country, pentagon reporter Nora Rhodes decides to go to San Diego to discover the truth behind this ape uprising and why apes everywhere are getting smarter!

I am really excited about the launch of MR Comics' new series, Revolution on the Planet of the Apes. Everything I have seen so far - from their brilliant cover images to dazzling interior art - has screamed "this is the real deal!" No super-fancy special effects trying to cover up bad actors pretending to be angst-ridden anti-heroes. No, this is old school, in-your-face "Chuck Heston-approved" Planet of the Apes action! I can hear the haunting soundtrack from the original film in my head looking at these nostalgic images. The story begins in the city of San Diego in the near future, ablaze with the flames of ape rebellion. Caesar is back, and leading the way for the human-run planet to transform into a warlike simian culture. All of the original movie characters are back in two new stories per issue, including Cornelius, Dr. Zaius, Zira, and Taylor. Classic sci-fi fans, join me in breaking out those Apes DVDs and do your best Taylor impression with me - "get your stinking paws off me you damned dirty apes!" But be sure you get your "stinking paws" on this debut issue!

Long Live Caesar!! Gorky the gorilla, out!

I'm not a the biggest sci-fi film fanatic, but I watch way more than the average monkey. Of all the properties I'd choose to work on, this is one of the top three I would've picked. Fun stuff as WFH gigs go! And it's something I have more of an affinity with than say, Star Wars or something.

It was a significant part of my childhood diet of Sci-Fi films/TV. It and Galactica were probably my favourites for a few years there, till I saw Bladerunner. Hard to pick out a favourite moment, but the one that has always stuck with me was the scene in Escape when Zira is tested by the humans; insulted by the childish peg game they ask her to do. A very short time after I saw that I found myself in a small room at the school board being tested just before I got streamed into a Special Ed program. I was asked to do a bunch of tests, the first looked a lot like that one Zira did and the first thing in my head was, “They think I'm a monkey?” That left a mark. I already felt a lot of affinity with the characters, but after that much more so.

So here\s the art. It's credited so far as pencils, but that's not quite accurate. I do the layouts from the script, they look like this....

This is an eight and half by eleven sheet of paper.
Sometimes my layouts are very loose, they all start loose. But usually i work them up to this point, to get the bulk of the mechanics of the drawing done quickly and keep from over packing the page. The result is these, which really are more like loose pencils. I scan them, and then print them out on bristol and then work the finished page with both pencils and ink. I was only contracted to do the pencil work but i find that using a pen for the contour lines and the blacks is faster and neater. I do a lot of details and much of the shading and building up of forms with pencils, but really I'm inking these pages too.

...And then Bernie does his thing...
